History of Employee Assistance Programs

The history of Employee Assistance Programs dates back to approximately 60 years ago, in the country of United States. It is evolved due to the ever-growing industrial and occupational alcohol programs and in general, due to job based programs such as personnel counseling, social betterment and work-related psychological health. In the year 1930, Alcoholics Anonymous was initiated and research was carried out with respect to implementation of alcoholism programs in the workplace. World war – II provided firm impetus to the government funding of several social and mental service programs. After that, numerous programs on alcoholism emerged during the 1950’s and 60’s which were either management-based or were supported by labor unions.
